One day in early '73, I got a phone call that changed my life forever. A guy named Greg Detoski called to inform me he'd heard that I played guitar and wanted to know if I'd be interested in joining a band he was getting together. Keep in mind that I didn't know this guy from Adam and his manner was, well, kinda strange (he sounded painfully shy, to be quite honest.) Anyway, he mentioned the names of the other guys he was getting this band together with and I hadn't heard of any of them either. At any rate, I decided what the hell - I'll go check this out. So I packed up my guitar and amp, jumped into my '67 bug (I'd sold the '60 long ago), and headed out for a practice session. Two of the guys were from Rosemount and we practiced in the basement of the bass player's house. It was really a fun jam session (I hadn't played in a band for three years and I realized that I missed it) so we decided to give the band a go. While we were thinking of a name (which can be a very stressful event) I suggested "Jet" because McCartney and Wings had just released the Band On The Run LP and that was a song I really liked. We all agreed to the name and opted to add the extra "t" at the end for the hell of it. We worked up cover songs that were both old and new and a few examples of our set list are:Band On The Run, Rock and Roll (Zeppelin), and Season Of The Witch. Quite an interesting mix, to say the least! At any rate, Jett played mostly school dances and never really went very far. The greatest achievement for me in this band was getting over the hurdle of singing live to fairly large crowds (I feel sorry for the audience at our first gig - I was god-awful!) Other good things to come from this band was my inspiration to assemble a PA system basically from scratch as well as buy myself a couple of Shure SM-57 mikes. Perhaps most important of all was meeting guitarist Alan Huff, who was to join me in many future bands. Sadly, Greg Detoski died several years ago in an auto accident. Greg was a great person with a big heart and I will always miss him dearly. |
